Two thirds of all the land we have protected is in conservation easement. An easement is, essentially, a legally binding promise by a landowner to protect most or all of his or her land forever, and a corresponding legal promise by Westchester Land Trust to make sure the owner keeps that promise.
Conservation easements allow public access only if the landowner agrees, and so they are often ideal ways to protect fragile environmental features, such as wetlands and streams that buffer reservoirs, or sensitive wildlife habitats.
Below is a complete list of all our conservation easements. But first here are short accounts of several of our recent easements.
